Growing up, I was a skinny kid who was fortunate to eat whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted, and as much as I wanted, without having to worry about gaining weight. I began lifting weights in college, put on some mass, got noticed and became hooked on working out. The best part was since my metabolism was super fast I didn’t need to do any cardio. After college I continued lifting weights, but as I got older and my jobs got more demanding I started spending less time in the gym. Unfortunately my eating habits didn’t change to match my lack of exercise and the slowing of my metabolism, so I began putting on weight.

With the birth of my children came late nights, little sleep, and constant snacking on junk food. I eventually began to hear all the cliché comments, such as “when are you expecting,” “what are you having,” “whoa…you put on some weight.” For the first time in my life, I became embarrassed to take my shirt off at the pool or beach. I was no longer comfortable in my own skin, my confidence was decreasing, plus my Doctor kept telling me my cholesterol was too high and to begin proper dieting. I knew I needed to make a change, but couldn’t motivate myself to do anything about it.

One afternoon I was watching TV and came across the P90X infomercial. I’ve always been an easy target for direct response advertising, but something about this one piqued my curiosity like no other fitness program or equipment did before. That night I went online to research the product and eventually found the message boards. I was skeptical of all the transformation stories I saw on the infomercial, but when I came to the message boards I saw there were literally hundreds of other people just like
those I saw on TV. I was convinced this program was legit so I ordered it that night. The next week I got the program in the mail and couldn’t wait to do the first workout. I still remember the pain and soreness I felt on Day 2. I had difficulties brushing my teeth, combing my hair, putting on deodorant, and questioned whether or not I made the right choice or could complete the program. Through some advice on the message boards, I took a step back and started with Power 90, a more basic program and eventually work my way up to P90X. I did 60 days of Power 90 and lost around 15 lbs before moving to P90X.

During my transformation I found my biggest challenges to be anything related to the nutrition guide, and lack of support from friends and family, not the physical workouts. I realized that eating clean would be a crucial element to succeeding, and unfortunately the complete change in my eating habits drew ridicule and cynicism from friends, family, and co-workers around me. Everyone thought I was crazy, questioned why I was even bothering, and expected me to go back to my old habits once the 90 days were over, if not sooner. I knew it would be tough to do this without any support, so I turned to the message boards for motivation and support.

To date I’ve completed more than five rounds of P90X and my eating habits have done a complete 180. I now eat clean over 90% of the time and push play before the sun rises six days a week. The best thing I did was start slow and work my way up beginning with Power 90. I attribute my success and lifestyle to the online community as much as I do to the actual programs.

It’s been over a year since I’ve been working out with Beachbody products and I am more committed to fitness and healthily living than ever before. My cholesterol is normal, I have energy to keep up with my kids, and I’ve never felt more comfortable with myself. I’m also now experiencing the expression, “what goes around comes around.” So many people that used to give me grief are now secretly confessing that they ordered P90X or are curious about it because of the success I had. It’s very satisfying knowing that changes I’ve made to better myself are encouraging others to do the same and it’s now my turn to help others that are now in the same boat I once was.

Getting in shape is not difficult at all if you simply follow the programs as they are laid out. All it takes is determination and commitment. The only secret is what will it take for you to say “today is the day” and that can only come from within you.
